Recently, I attempted to subscribe to Netflix, a platform offering a vast library of documentaries and educational content. However, my credit card payment was repeatedly declined. To my astonishment, the bank informed me that it would not process payments to Netflix because it was considered incompatible with Islamic banking principles. This refusal to facilitate access to educational and informative content in the name of Islamic banking restricts the knowledge and cultural enrichment that platforms like Netflix offer.
I believe it is essential for the authorities concerned to take note of such practices and evaluate their compatibility with the values of open-mindedness, knowledge, and progress.
