A serious issue

Dear Editor,

Turbat is the second largest city of Balochistan, and one of its major issues is lack of colleges. Students come to Turbat from different parts of Balochistan to get higher education but, unfortunately, they cannot do so. The government has failed to establish colleges for the students of district Kech. The education minister of Balochistan should take steps to address this issue, and open colleges for the students.

Feedback

Respected Editor,

I was pleased to see the article Depression Epidemic by Zakeriya Ali (20 October issue). Raising awareness about the rising mental health concerns experienced by a large part of the global population is very important.

Depression is often referred to (in mental health circles) as the “common cold” of psychiatry, indicating its high level of prevalence. Though there are many explanations, both biological and psychological, as to the causes of depression, I believe that we can no longer ignore the fact that as humans we do not exist in isolation from each other, plant and animal life and the planet as a whole.

For the people living in the current times - and even in the past 20 or so years - is mental ill health not a ‘normal response’ to an ‘abnormal situation’?

As a clinical psychologist, I believe that while individual and personal level efforts to improve one’s mental health are vital, true and lasting change (i.e., reversing the epidemic) requires that we change the circumstances, structures and functioning of the world that is making us ill.
