Prince Harry and Meghan Markle put the first crack on the Royal Family when they quit the Firm in 2020
The Royal Family failed to live up to the embodiment of a united family due to a row of events for the last three years.
Youngest son of now-King Charles, Prince Harry quite shook up the monarchy after he announced his decision to give up his royal position alongside his wife, Meghan Markle in 2020.
Moreover, Charles’ disgraced brother Prince Andrew was also ousted as a working royal for his association with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Hence, historian Dr Ed Owens suggested that the monarchy should drop its family image since it’s evident they can’t live up to it.
"The story is a slightly tragic one as it has damaged this idea of a family monarchy. This idea that this is a united group who embody, if you like, the best of British family life,” he said on the Mirror’s Pod Save The King podcast.
He noted the idea of King Charles III’s reign being supported by his two “trusty lieutenants – William and Harry” went “so disastrously wrong” as soon as the Sussexes exit the Firm.
“It really put paid to that vision of the family monarchy,” the author of book After Elizabeth: Can the Monarchy Save Itself? continued. “It has done much damage to that narrative of happy family life.”
"So why not, as I suggest in my book, do away with this family narrative once and for all? We don't need to have this big royal family presenting themselves as moral exemplars."
“King Charles is uniquely placed because he knows first-hand that the ideal of the family rarely matches the reality of the family monarchy,” Owens added.
