Instep rounds up this weekend’s hot and happening activities.
Lahooti Melo 2016
After Lahore played host to some of music’s most inventive artists this past week during the two-day music fest, Lahore Music Meet, it’s time to turn our attention to the inaugural edition of Lahooti Melo 2016, which will take place in Hyderabad tomorrow and day after tomorrow. That’s this Saturday and Sunday.
Hosted by Lahooti Live Sessions and the Sketches and spearheaded by Saif Samejo (whose dedication to music is worth admiration), the two-day event, scheduled to take place at the Hyderabad Sports Club, will feature talks, interactive panels as well as performances.
With participation from eclectic artists like Zohaib Kazi, Abbas Ali Khan, Zoe Viccaji, Ali Noor, Ahsan Bari, Faisal Rafi as well as folk giants like Juman Latif & Fakirs, Mai Dhai, expect to be blown away this weekend.
Theatre and Comedy
Nida Butt’s latest theatre production, Grease the Musical, is heading into its final leg. Currently running in Karachi at the Arts Council, the colourful, jolly production featuring Natasha Humera Ejaz and many others is still on for a few days. If you still haven’t seen it, catch a show this weekend before it says goodbye.
If you’re in the mood to laugh, look out for the show, ‘Tariq Road par Comedy Scene’. Hosted by Comedy Scene, the show will feature names like Fahad Zaki, Harold John, Junaid Malik (JD) Kashif Shahzad, Faraz Ahmed, Hassaan Bin Shaheen, Nida Syed, and Faheem Azam. With tickets priced at Rs. 200, the show is an inexpensive treat and will surely provide you with some comedic moments.
Also happening this week in Karachi: the ‘Improv Jam – Monkey Juice!’. Hosted by Improv jam, the event is a chance to see improvisational theatre comedy show. With Faris Khalid serving as host and a line-up that includes names like Bassam Shazli, Sara Ashraf, Arman Majidullah, Ali Fahad Mir and Faiza Saleem, it looks all set to be a rollicking evening.
Cinema
Opening this week is Ashir Azeem’s Maalik, a film that plays on the themes of nationalism, patriotic fervor and taking ownership of one’s country. Taking on political corruption, the film directed by Azeem, has an all-star cast that includes Farhan Ally Agha, Ashir Azeem, Adnan Shah, Hassan Niazi and Rashid Farooqui.
Having said that, if filmy patriotism doesn’t appeal to you, there are foreign choices like the animated Zootopia, Bollywood’s Ki and Ka that brings Kareena Kapoor-Khan back in the spotlight and the brand new Eddie the Eagle that tells the story of the “British underdog ski jumper who charmed the world at the 1988 Winter Olympics”. Starring Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackman, the film looks somewhat appealing and could make for decent viewing.
Fawad Khan-starrer Kapoor & Sons is also playing across cinemas, still. Given the reviews, our suggestion, check it out if you haven’t already.
