SC adjourns Sindh Mayor election case till April 12

ISLAMABAD :The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the counsels appeared in Sindh Local Government election case to complete their arguments soon and adjourned hearing of the case till April 12.

A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali and comprising Justice Amir Hani Muslim and Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman heard the case filed by Muttahida Quomi Movement (MQM).

During the course of proceedings Dr. Babar Awan, counsel for Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), appeared before the bench and stated that it was responsibility of the Election Commission of Pakistan to conduct fair election and issue notification in this regard.

He said that all constitutional institutions are bound to assist the ECP in every election. The chief justice asked Babar Awan to assist the court regarding election of Mayor and Chairman in the Sindh province.

Babar Awan said that the procedure for conducting election of Union Councilor or Nazim was mentioned in the Representation of People s Act (RoPA).

He said that the election for mayor and deputy mayor could not be held till completion of Electoral College according to Section 21 of RoPA.

Awan said each province had the right to adopt its own local government system according to Article 140. The court directed the counsels to complete their arguments soon and adjourned hearing of the case.
