Why were a few miscreants allowed to march up to the Red Zone in the federal capital? Is the Pakistani state so impotent that a few thousand men carrying sticks can hold this system hostage to their demands?
Mumtaz Qadri, who had been assigned the duty to guard the governor of Punjab, committed a crime and murdered the person he was supposed to protect. The universally accepted code of ethics required him to resign if he had any reservations, but he did not do so. If every individual in uniform was allowed to act in this manner there would be chaos. If this government does not have the capacity or the will to perform its constitutional duty to enforce rule of law, than either the minister concerned or the PM must resign. In a democracy, ministers who fail to perform must accept responsibility. A few months ago, our finance minister spent a huge amount on advertising a tax amnesty scheme for traders that has failed miserably. Morality and ethics demand that he should quit.
