This maybe the best casting news we’ve heard this year as Sherlock star(s) Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman will, according to substantial rumours on the Internet, be joined by, wait for it, Tom Hiddleston in the hit detective television series’ upcoming, long-awaited season four in 2017.

Hiddleston, who is currently making waves after starring in The Night Manager, will essay the third Holmes brother in BBC’s global TV hit, Sherlock. Though he is not part of the original Sherlock universe, penned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the plotline may happen given the fact that a vague reference to a third brother was made on the show’s previous seasons.

Mark Gatiss, co-creator of Sherlock, who also essays the role of Mycroft Holmes on the show, is doing his best to land Hiddleston in the serial. On his part, Hiddleston, who is quite busy with multiple projects and is on the short-list for potential James Bond replacements after Daniel Craig, is a fan of the show and is open to the idea. The chances of this happening, therefore, are very, very good.

Sherlock is slated to appear in January 2017 and shooting for it should begin next month. After a weak season three and a terrible special episode – The Abominable Bride – Sherlock will return to its roots in season four as Jim Moriarty (a brilliantly Andrew Scott), Holmes’ ultimate evil nemesis, rises from the dead.
