Musharraf’s exit

Gen (r) Musharraf has finally been allowed to proceed abroad for medical treatment. The government is trying to save face by hiding behind the Supreme Court. The PPP is trying hard to blame the government for allowing the general to leave the country after a deal. The former general has promised to return to the country after recovering. However, his conduct soon after landing at Dubai is questionable. His lawyer’s plea before the courts was that he may become paralysed if not allowed to avail urgent medical treatment abroad. However, he appeared to have regained his health and was seen chairing a meeting of his political party in Dubai.

What else should we term it but hypocrisy by all – including the general? In the long run, the government’s decision may be in the interest of the country for a better civil-military relationship and the success of the war on terror. Our politicians should realise that to establish a true, functioning democracy, they should prove themselves to be much more capable and honest.
