This refers to the news report, ‘Pak geothermal energy resources can generate 100,000MW power’ (March 24). The offer made by scientist Javed Ahmad should be accepted by the federal government to meet our unending energy needs. The scientist should be provided facilities to set up infrastructure/thermal power plants on all probable sites in all federating units. Similarly, provincial administrations should also act as facilitators on this project of immense importance to the country.

There is no harm in accepting the US aid of $7-8 billion for the procurement of equipment. A feasibility study on the demarcation of sites for the generation of electricity in the light of the report revealed by Javed Ahmad should be carried out as soon as possible. This project should be prioritised over all other projects. This is also a cost-effective electricity source costing between 5-10 cents per unit. Since this mode of electricity is being produced in 90 countries, we can also benefit from their expertise. This opportunity should be availed at all cost to get rid of the energy shortage.
