As expected, all religious parties are out in the field to oppose the Women’s Protection Act, hurling all sorts of insults at Punjab Assembly members for passing a bill that they consider is in conflict with the Shariah. By opposing the act, one wonders what the clergy is up against: should men be permitted to physically and psychologically torture their spouses? By opposing the bill and putting the onus on the Shariah, are they doing any service to the religion?
Religious parties are trying to deceive the general public by saying that this law will implicate each and every man. Why do they assume that? Sadly, this act has become a rallying cry for religious extremists, but, it is good that it has exposed them in public. Their sole target is not to uphold religious teachings but to maintain centuries-old traditions.
