Exhibition Glacial Movements and the Ghaib (Unseen) by the Pak Khawateen Painting Club and Lumens Studios is exhibited at VM Art Gallery, ZVMG Rangoonwala Community Centre, Karachi. This exhibition explores the history and politics of water bodies, flow of water, fluidity, bodies blocking water, and bodies moving along the water. The exhibition will continue till March 24.
The Club’s project aims to showcase the precarity and beauty of living with large natural formations such as glaciers. The exhibition space features an experimental and experiential display of the works produced during fieldwork, including journals, videos, sounds, photography and paintings. Each individual artist’s work is viewable on a website within the gallery for visitors to view.
Pak Khawateen Painting Club invited Lumens Studios (UK) for their third excursion and visited four glaciers in the Hunza district, leading an all-female expedition. The group also went to the adjoining towns to research the effects of glacial lake outbursts on the communities that rely on those glaciers for water.
Borrowing from the work of James C. Scott, these communities migrated to the mountains to remain stateless and not fall into the trap of being indentured slaves to produce and toil on the lands of agrarian states.
While the plains are sites for barrages and dams and have also been agrarian societies that relied on large populations and slavery to produce food; the mountains were the opposite and housed small egalitarian communities who were runaways.
Lumens Studios is an art collective, focused on themes of astronomy and light, regularly exhibiting in churches as well as galleries.
Through art, exhibitions and seminars they aim to raise a dialogue about how humanity understands existence.
