23% decrease in crime rate

The Islamabad police arrested 1,866 accused during the ongoing year for their alleged involvement in various crime cases besides recovery of cache of weapons, narcotics and looted items worth over Rs417 million from them.

According to details, Islamabad police devised effective strategy to enhance policing measures in the city for ensuring protection to the lives and property of the citizens and special efforts were made to curb activities of anti-social elements and achieved significant success.

SSP Islamabad Sajid Kiani has said that 23 per cent decrease has been witnessed in crime rate during 2016 as compared to 2015 and massive crackdown against absconders, criminal elements and search operation against suspects was launched.

He said that it is for the first time that some district in the country has witnessed decrease in crime rate. SSP (Operations) said that 85 murder cases were registered in 2016 while 105 were reported in 2015; one case of kidnapping for ransom in 2016 as compared to eight in 2015; 17 dacoity cases in 2016 and 30 in 2015.

Similarly, 240 cases of car theft were reported in 2016 as compared to 346 in 2016; 259 street crime cases in 2016 and 305 in 2015; 243 burglary cases in 2016 and 254 in 2015. In 2016, 91 criminals’ gangs were busted while 115 burglars, 43 auto-thieves, 57 persons involved in blind murder cases were held. Moreover, 709 criminals of various gangs were held by Islamabad police.

During this period, police nabbed 3,700 proclaimed offenders in crackdown against those criminals being at large. Islamabad police, following national action plan, ensured search and combing operation in the whole district. SSP Islamabad Sajid Kiani has said it is the prime responsibility of police to provide relief to citizens, adding that every possible effort would be made to provide protection to the lives and property of citizens as well as resolving their complaints on immediate basis.

Mr. Kiani has also directed all police officials to brief those personnel performing security duties at media houses, educational institutions and other important locations. The SSP Sajid Kiani said that Islamabad police got remarkable success through cameras installed under safe city project and directed to get more benefit from these surveillance cameras. He also sought cooperation of citizens for effective policing measures in the city.
