BELFAST: Northern Ireland police charged two men Tuesday over weekend shootings that fuelled fears of renewed violence in the long-troubled British province.
The pair were charged with attempting to kill a police officer in a Northern Ireland border village on Saturday night, police said in a statement.
"The charges are understood to be connected to an incident in the village of Garrison on Saturday 21 November," the statement said.
The men, aged 26 and 32, were also charged with possessing a firearm and ammunition with intent to endanger life, it said.
They will appear in Dungannon Court on Wednesday.
Shortly after the shooting incident, a huge car bomb crashed through barriers outside a police headquarters in Belfast, and partially exploded.
Both incidents have been blamed on dissident paramilitaries opposed to the peace process, and fuelled fears of renewed violence, more than a decade after a landmark peace accord. |
