Senate SC summons PCB officials over sad performance
Updated at: 0220 PST, Wednesday, November 11, 2009
ISLAMABAD: Senate Standing Committee on Sports has summoned Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials in the first week of December regarding the sad performance of national cricket team against New Zealand.

Expressing its dissatisfaction over performance of 40 sports federations in promoting and developing sports in the country, the Senate Standing Committee on Sports has directed the Ministry of Sports to monitor affairs of various federations particularly with regard to disbursement of funds and their elections.

"Most of these federations have become politicized and turned into family affairs, contributing nothing towards promotion of sports yet receiving funds regularly from the ministry", it observed.

"Don't let these bodies become 'Qabza Groups', and ask them to draw a comprehensive roadmap for complete revival of sports in the country', it added.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Abdul Ghaffar Qureshi said the Committee would do its utmost to promote sports in the country and to support the ministry in its plans to revive past glory of the country in various sports.

The meeting also constituted a sub-committee to be headed by Senator Jehangir Badar as Convener and including Senators Tank Hussain Mashhadi, Haroon Khan, Naeem Hussain Chattha and SardarAli Khan as members to streamline matters pertaining to sports federations particularly their performance as viable entities instrumental in developing sports.

The Committee also instructed the ministry to take concrete measures for patronizing traditional sports like 'Kushti' and 'Malakhra' besides acquiring the services of good coaches if possible from abroad and then try to train our own coaches with their help.

Members of the Committee expressed the view unless we banish politics from sports, there is no likelihood of their revival.
