Australia aid ship leaves for tsunami-hit Samoa, Tonga
Updated at: 1200 PST, Tuesday, October 27, 2009
SYDNEY: An Australian navy ship carrying donations and heavy equipment left for Samoa and Tonga Tuesday, a month after a devastating tsunami killed 186 people and wiped out entire villages, officials said.

Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said HMAS Tobruk was carrying relief aid which will help shattered coastal communities rebuild after the September 29 disaster.

"The Melbourne Metropolitan Fire Brigade has donated a fire truck to Samoa to replace one destroyed during the tsunami," Smith said.

"A large consignment of heavy machinery and donated goods from the Australian community ... will also be delivered to both Samoa and Tonga.

"Tobruk will carry earth movers, generators, cement mixers and other heavy machinery, provided by the Australian Government, to be used in Tonga to clear debris and rebuild over the next 12-18 months."

Australia also announced another five million dollars (4.6 million US) in recovery and reconstruction aid, taking the country's total contribution to 13 million.

Villages and resorts in Samoa, American Samoa and northern Tonga were flattened by the giant waves generated by a massive 8.0-magnitude earthquake, the strongest in a nearly a century.
