ISLAMABAD: President Gen Pervez Musharraf has accepted the resignations of Attorney-General (AG) Makhdoom Ali Khan and Deputy Attorney-General Tariq Mahmood Khokhar, who tendered their resignations immediately after the verdict of a full court of the Supreme Court on the presidential reference filed against Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
The Presidency conveyed to both the top counsel of the government, who are away from the country, the acceptance of their resignations on Tuesday. Makhdoom is in New York while Khokhar is in London.
Presidency sources told The News that the successors of the two would be picked up in a meeting between the president and the prime minister. This meeting could take place today (Wednesday), the sources added.
Makhdoom appeared in the reference before the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) on behalf of the government in March on notice. He also appeared before the full court of the Supreme Court again on the notice of the court.
Makhdoom started his career as a lawyer by joining the chamber of Syed Sharifuddin Pirzada. Later he attained name in the legal arena through his commendable faculties as an intelligent legal practitioner. He headed the legal chamber that contested a number of famous cases. He joined the government about six years ago as the Attorney-General.
After losing the reference against the chief justice, Makhdoom informed the president within 15 minutes of the pronouncement of the judgment about his resignation. He also informed Pirzada, who was pleading the reference on behalf of the referring authority about his decision and Justice (retd) Abdul Qayyum, who was defending the reference on behalf of the federal government.
Both the distinguished lawyers confirmed the gesture of the AG. Makhdoom faxed his resignation about half an hour of the decision from his office in the Supreme Court building. The president insisted that he should not step down. But Makhdoom started packing up and left Islamabad within 48 hours of the verdict. He also handed over his resignation to the Presidency personally before leaving for Karachi. Makhdoom rejoined his law chamber after reaching Karachi from where he left for the United States on a personal trip.
DAG Tariq Mahmood Khokhar, who was in London, also tendered his resignation as expression of solidarity with the AG. According to sources Justice (retd) Malik Abdul Qayyum and Ahmar Balal Sufi have been tipped to replace the outgoing government counsel. Ahmar Balal Sufi is attached with the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) as prosecutor.
