ISLAMABAD: Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman and Pakistan Muslim League’s Secretary General Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed said Pakistan and Russia are against the use of force in resolving the Iran nuclear issue.
“Pakistan and Russia were also of the view that there should be dialogue among various factions in Afghanistan to ensure peace in the region,” he said on Thursday while addressing a reception hosted in honour of a six-member Russian parliamentary delegation here at the Parliament House.
He said Pakistan and Russia have unanimity of views on various regional and international issues and the parliamentary delegation’s visit to Pakistan would further promote bilateral relations.
Mushahid said both the countries have common interest on various issues and regional situation. He said in this scenario, the policies of domination, hegemony and use of forces could not work and every country should follow the UN charter.
Welcoming the Russian parliamentary delegation, Senator Mushahid said Russia is a land of intellectuals, writers and scholars. He expressed the hope that the delegation’s visit would promote people to people contact between the two countries.
Mushahid also hoped that Russia would play an active role in finding peaceful solution to Kashmir issue to ensure peace in the region. Earlier, during the Russian delegation’s meeting with Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Mushahid Hussain explained Pakistan’s viewpoint on various regional and international issues including situation in Afghanistan. He expressed gratitude to the Russian delegation for their country’s extending support and help to Pakistan after the October 8 earthquake. He also thanked Russian support to Pakistan for its entry into Shanghai Cooperation Organization and said Pakistan helped Russia to have observer status in the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC).
He said, “Russia has played proactive and positive role in Middle East.” He also appreciated Russia for extending an invitation to the Hamas government and said it was a very positive and great step for solidarity of democratic process in Palestine.
He said South Asia is an unstable, volatile and tense area, for various reasons. Referring to US President Bush’s visit to South Asia and nuclear civil deal between India and USA, he said it has started new arms race in the region.
Mushahid Hussain said the deal is a violation of NPT and American laws and proof of a double standard of American leaders. He appreciated the Russia role in the Iran nuclear controversy and complimented positive steps it taken in this regard. He said double standards should not be applied by the world on nuclear issue and all emerging nuclear states should be treated equally. Committee members Maulana Samiul Haq, Prof Khurshid Ahmed, Nisar Memon and Latif Khosa also spoke on this occasion.
