Eight militants die in US drone attack

Saturday, November 21, 2009

By our correspondent

MIRAMSHAH: Eight militants were killed and two others injured when a US drone hit a house in the Michikhel area in North Waziristan on Friday, the second such attack in less than 24 hours.

Tribal sources said a US Predator hit a house in the Michikhel area in Mirali Tehsil, 18 kilometres from here, at 10:22 am, killing seven suspected militants on the spot and injuring two others.

“The US spy plane targeted the Hujra of Gandak in the Michikhel area,” the sources said and added that eight local militants were killed in the attack. They said the militants besieged the area soon after the attack and no one was allowed to enter the spot. The residents said the US drones continued flying over the area even after the attack.

Political administration officials in the tribal agency confirmed the drone attack but said they had no information about the number of casualties and identities of the slain persons.

The North Waziristan Agency is the stronghold of Taliban leader Hafiz Gul Bahadar and Maulvi Nazir. On Thursday, three persons were killed and three others sustained injuries when a spy plane hit the house of a tribesman in the Shana Khwara area on the Datakhel Road in North Waziristan. Sources said the drone hit the house of a tribesman Gul Bat with two missiles.
