| ‘Noxious’ food kills ex-PAF officer, wife |

ISLAMABAD: A retired officer of the Pakistan Air Force and his spouse died on Friday after consuming allegedly noxious contents from an outlet of a famed American food chain in Super Market.
The bodies have been handed over to their heirs after autopsy and the police have started investigations. When contacted, SSP Islamabad Sikandar Hayat told The News that Wing Commander (retd) Ghulam Abbas and his wife Sughra Abbas took meals from a Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) outlet at 2.18pm and returned home in Sector F-11.
He said Abbas, suddenly, fell sick and was taken to the PAF hospital but lost the battle for life upon arrival at the hospital. Meanwhile, his spouse Sughra Abbas also died at home in the same condition.
The SSP said the police have recovered a bill of KFC paid at 2.18pm as well as sandwiches bought from United Bakers with a bottle of drinking water. Sandwiches and drinking water have been sent for chemical examination, Hayat said.
Dr Waseem Khawaja, medico-legal officer (MLO) and spokesman for the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), when asked by this correspondent said the cause of death was definitely noxious contents of the food.
He said the contents of stomach have been taken for detection of poison while pieces of liver, spleen, kidney, heart and brain have been sent for chemical examination with the remaining food recovered from their vehicle.
Sajid Mehmood, manager of the KFC outlet, when asked for his comments, said: “We have no information regarding the death of any retired wing commander and his wife.” He added neither the police nor any other agency had contacted them so far.
Mehmood said they dealt with hundreds of customers daily but no one has lodged any complaint with them (about the food). Abdur Razzaq, manager of the United Bakers, also said he had not received any intimation about the incident. Saying he had been working with the bakery for a long time, he claimed never to have received any complaint (over food products).
Razzaq claimed the food in his bakery was hygienic and it would be proved by the chemical examiner’s report. Dr Shizra Abbas, daughter of the deceased Ghulam Abbas, when contacted, declined to offer any comments, suggesting she was too distraught over the demise of her parents to speak on the matter now.
