By Muhammad Ejaz Khan
QUETTA: Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif has said the issues of Balochistan should be resolved on an urgent basis.
Addressing a press conference at the CM House here on Wednesday, he announced setting up of the Balochistan Institute of Cardiology (BIC) at a cost of Rs 2 billion to be built with the financial assistance of the Punjab. Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Muhammad Aslam Raisani was also present on the occasion.
Shahbaz Sharif said India was playing a despicable role in destabilising Balochistan and other parts of the country, including Waziristan, and there was ample proof of the Indian involvement.
The Punjab chief minister said the undemocratic rulers of the past were responsible for the poverty, unemployment and backwardness of the country in general and of Balochistan in particular.
He announced an increase of 90 in the quota of Balochistan students in Punjab’s technical institutions from 160. He also announced Rs 300 million for the Balochistan University from the Education Endowment Fund of the Punjab province.
He said there was no political motive behind the construction of the BIC in Quetta. He said Mian Nawaz Sharif had instructed him to do whatever he could for the welfare of the province.
Earlier, he held a meeting with Nawab Muhammad Aslam Raisani and the provincial cabinet members. A Memorandum of Understanding was also signed between Balochistan and the Punjab for provision of coal to the Punjab from Balochistan. This is aimed at generating some 150 megawatts of electricity from the Dera Ghazi Khan powerhouse. Senior officials concerned from the two provinces signed the MoU.
Later, while addressing the party workers at the residence of former PML-N provincial chief Sardar Yaqoob Khan Nasir, Shahbaz Sharif regretted that the province was ignored in the past. He underlined the need to have all the stakeholders on board in order to resolve the issues and to restore peace in the province.
He said the country could be strengthened by giving the smaller provinces their due rights. He declared that the Punjab would support the stance of Balochistan on the NFC Award issue.
APP adds: Shahbaz Sharif said the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz wants to see the PPP-led government complete its tenure so that the democratic system could gain strength.
Addressing the party workers, he said: “My brother and PML-N Quaid Mian Nawaz Sharif has made it clear to President Asif Ali Zardari that we are zealous supporters of democracy and want its prevalence in the country.” He said it was need of the hour to support the democratic system in the country.
He expressed the confidence that Mian Nawaz Sharif would be elected prime minister once again and would play a significant role in the development of the country. Sardar Yaqoob Nasir also spoke on the occasion.
