Blast razes mosque to ground; brave soldier rewarded
By Javed Aziz Khan
PESHAWAR: Three persons were killed and over 30 others sustained injuries in yet another suicide car bombing, targeting Badaber police station near the city on the Kohat Road.
This was the fifth incident of its kind in and outside Peshawar during the last eight days.
The powerful blast razed to the ground a mosque, a large portion of the police station and three nearby buildings. It also injured some horses in the nearby tonga stand and damaged several vehicles in the vicinity.
Eyewitnesses said constable Umer Rahman of the Frontier Constabulary (FC) opened fire as he became suspicious about a fast-approaching vehicle near the Badaber police station around 7:40am.
“When the brave constable opened fire, the explosives stuffed in the vehicle exploded. The soldier also suffered injuries but he is safe and sound,” Frontier Constabulary Commandant Zafarullah Khan told The News. He said Umer Rahman had been rewarded with one-step promotion. Those killed in the blast were identified as Dilshad from Badaber village, Abdul Mannan hailing from Mohmand Agency and Sher Rahman belonging to Kurram Agency.
Apart from Umer Rahman, others who were injured included police Inspector (Investigation) Khaista Rahman, Sub-Inspector Liaqat, Hussain Khan, Hayat Sher, Haji Ghafoor, Tariq Shah, Rafiq, Arif, Amin, Amir Muhammad, Inam, Jan Ali, Nadeem, Tariq Pervez, Rafiullah, Hassan Khan, Yousuf, Waheed, Ihsan and five-year-old Dilshad.
Eighteen of the wounded persons were taken to the City Satellite Hospital situated on the Kohat Road while 30 others were admitted to the Lady Reading Hospital in the city.
An eyewitness, Amal Khan, said he was waiting for bus at some distance from the police station when a pick-up truck came from the side of Mashogagar Road and then there was a huge blast.
“When I regained consciousness, some buildings had been razed to the ground while people were lying all over and crying for help,” he recalled.
Shahab, another eyewitness, said the motorists and commuters retrieved the bodies and also transported the wounded people to hospitals. “It was like a doomsday. Everybody was running due to fear or seeking help,” he said.
Officials of the bomb disposal squad estimated that around 250 kilograms of explosives had been stuffed in the vehicle.
Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Liaqat Ali said it was due to strict and proper security measures taken by the police that the bomber could not make it to the city.
NWFP Assembly Deputy Speaker Khushdil Khan, who was elected MPA from the constituency that includes Badaber where the bombing took place, said the government would eliminate terrorists.
Senior Minister Bashir Ahmad Bilour said those talking about halt to the military operation were in fact supporting the terrorists. “Terrorists cannot pressure us with these tactics. They are on the run and will be eliminated soon,” he added.
The bombing created further fears in Peshawar, which has been in the grip of uncertainty due to the wave of bomb explosions, target-killings and kidnappings.
APP adds from Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, Minister for Interior Rehman Malik, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar and Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira have condemned the attack on the Badaber police station.
In their separate statements, they said the government would continue to chase the militants till their elimination.
They prayed to Almighty Allah to rest the departed souls in eternal peace and grant courage to the bereaved families to bear the loss with equanimity.
Rehman Malik said the Taliban have proved they are pursuing an anti-Islam policy by targeting a mosque in Peshawar.
He said that those who were targeting sacred religious places could not be pardoned, adding the nation had now seen a real cruel face of the Taliban.
