| Govt serious in implementing CoD, Zardari assures Nawaz |

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has conveyed to PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif that the PPP government is serious in implementing the Charter of Democracy (CoD) and repealing all the dictatorial amendments to the Constitution, including the controversial 17th Amendment.
According to sources, the message to Nawaz Sharif had been conveyed recently in which it was clearly communicated that Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional Reforms Mian Raza Rabbani had been directed to expedite the task to complete it soon.
Though the sources close to both the Presidency and the PML-N, claimed that President Asif Ali Zardari also held a telephonic conservation with Nawaz Sharif, who is in Gilgit in recent days, and expressed his seriousness to repeal the 17th Amendment.
However, presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar said no telephonic conservation between President Zardari and Nawaz Sharif took place. “If there had been a telephonic conservation, why we would have concealed it,” he added.
Meanwhile, the sources claimed that the meeting between Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and Nawaz Sharif scheduled for Monday would also focus on the same issue.
The sources said PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal, who is a member of parliamentary committee, also held a meeting with committee chairman Mian Raza Rabbani in his chamber on Saturday at the Parliament House where Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Syed Naveed Qamar was also present.
In the closed door meeting, the sources said, different options were discussed to expedite the task of the committee.
It may be mentioned here that Mian Raza Rabbani from the PPP and Ahsan Iqbal from the PML-N were the main authors of the Charter of Democracy.
The sources said the committee had completed the review of the 17th Amendment and decided to remove the dictatorial amendments from the Constitution and undo all the protections given to General Pervez Musharraf under Article 270-AA through the 17th Amendment.
