Says 58-2b ‘irrelevant’ in presence of active judiciary;SWA military operation to end sooner than expected
By Faizan Bangash & Saleemur Rahman
KASUR: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) is buried and termed Article 58-2b an ‘irrelevant’ issue under current circumstances when the judiciary is so ‘active’.
He was talking to media persons after inaugurating a 200 MW Independent Power Project (IPP) in Jambar Kalan, Kasur on Saturday.
Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif, Governor Salmaan Taseer, federal ministers Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Rana Farooq Saeed Khan and Chairman Nishat Group Mian Mansha were also present on the occasion.
Regarding speculations of change in the Presidency, Gilani said the system is stable, adding democracy had been restored in the country after a long time, so some time was needed for stability.
About the love-hate relationship between the PPP and the PML-N, he said: “We have only love-love relationship.”
Answering a question regarding the NRO, the prime minister said: “The NRO is buried forever, adding tabling the ordinance in parliament was as per the court’s order and the sense of House had been respected in this regard.”
About the repealing of Article 58-2b, he said: “This was irrelevant as when courts were so active, this clause could be challenged and may lose significance.”
He said all political parties, including the MQM, were taken into confidence on the NRO issue. About the relationship of the PPP with the MQM, he said the MQM’s criticism was welcome as everyone has the right to hold his opinion.
Answering a question regarding the Pakistan-India composite dialogue process, the prime minister said the government wanted to build good relationship with India but on equal terms.
He said Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has also expressed his resolve to discuss all issues with Pakistan, adding ìwe also want composite dialogue with the neighbouring countryî.
Referring to the military operation in South Waziristan, he hoped the operation would end sooner than expected.
About speculations of Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan’s appointment as Punjab governor or attorney general, Gilani said he had held meeting with Aitzaz but no such issue came under discussion. He said Aitzaz was affiliated with the PPP and would remain associated with the PPP.
Earlier, addressing the inauguration ceremony, the prime minister congratulated the Nishat Group for setting up the IPP and termed it a part of steps being taken for curbing the challenge of power shortage.
Our Kasur correspondent adds: Gilani said the decision to launch the Rah-e-Nijat operation in Waziristan was the right step to curb terrorism.
He said the government was reconstructing Malakand, Swat and South Waziristan.
Gilani praised the role of security forces in eliminating terror activities. He said majority of Waziristan people are loyal and peace-loving citizens.
Agencies add: On a question whether Pakistan will raise the issue of evidence of Indian involvement in Balochistan, Gilani said the matter could be discussed once Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh comes to the negotiation table.
