| Gilani to win back Nawaz for own survival |

By Rauf Klasra
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani is reportedly focusing his energies on ways to bring the PML-N MPs back to his cabinet as it has dawned on him that his own fate rests with the survival of President Asif Zardari in the Presidency. As such, the only option to stay in power is to share it with those political players who are yet again out to get rid of the PPP government.
PM Gilani, during his coming meeting with Nawaz Sharif, may try to use the 17th Amendment as a “bargain chip” to make the PML-N rejoin the cabinet so as to put an end to the current intriguing politics, which have once again threatened the whole political system.
PPP leaders may heave a sigh of relief if PML-N stalwarts like Ch Nisar Ali Khan, Khawaja Asif, Ishaq Dar and others rejoin the cabinet, as they all have become a source of trouble for the ruling party within and outside parliament.
Sources claimed there was realisation in PM Gilaniís camp that if President Zardari was made to quit, as indications become clear, he (Gilani) would be shown the door within a few months. So, the sources said, Gilani too was fighting for his survival by securing the interests of Zardari.
Inside sources said unlike public perception, Gilani believed if Zardari quit, he would not be able to continue, particularly when the MQM had established itself as an unreliable coalition partner. PM Gilani was said to have been never happy with the decision of the PML-N to quit. Gilani had even once told this correspondent that ministers like Ishaq Dar, Ch Nisar Ali Khan, Ahsan Iqbal, Tehmina Daultana, Mehtab Abbasi and others in his cabinet had greatly helped him run his government. Gilani believed their presence in cabinet meetings had made a huge difference as they all had been working in the past as ministers and knew how to deal with bureaucracy and other important issues facing the government. But, the refusal of Zardari to honour his commitment on the judges’ issue led Gilani to swallow this bitter pill.
PM Gilani was said to be of the view that he had many valid reasons to make the PML-N rejoin the cabinet in the name of ending the current crises. He might tell Nawaz how judges and the Punjab government were restored. The Centre didn’t oppose Nawaz and Shahbaz over the issue of their eligibility. Now his demand not to get the NRO passed through parliament was also met. Finally, the PM was ready to table the 18th Amendment bill in parliament.
Gilani understands that one fine morning, he may be asked to seek a fresh vote of confidence to bring in-house change. Nawaz Sharif has already hinted at mid term elections in the country, which gives a good idea about the prevailing mindset of those forces that are now assuring Gilani of their support after getting rid of Zardari.
