Zardari sets March deadline; Babar says no deadline given by president

By Asim Yasin

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari had directed the government to complete the process of constitutional reforms by March 2010.

“I have asked the government to repeal all amendments enacted by the dictator before my address to parliament,” the president told a delegation of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists led by its president Pervez Shaukat, which met him at the Presidency on Friday.

Farhatullah Babar, spokesman for the president, however, said that President Zardari had not given any deadline for repealing the controversial constitutional amendments, adding that the Constitutional Reforms Committee would decide the timeframe.

He said it had been agreed that controversial constitutional amendments would be abolished before March next. He said the president asked the government to repeal all the disputed constitutional amendments without wasting time.

During the meeting that lasted two hours, the president held wide-ranging discussion with the delegation on issues relating to national politics, reservations of the allied parties and the National Reconciliation Ordinance. The president said the decisions were being made in consultation with the coalition partners.

The president dispelled the impression that all decisions were made in the Presidency instead of the Prime Minister’s House. “ Parliament is supreme and all decisions are made there,” he told the delegation.

On the Balochistan issue, the president said the government would soon present a comprehensive package that would remove the sense of deprivation among the people of Balochistan. He further said it is the first time that the finance award will be presented with consensus and according to the wishes of the federating units.

According to the participants of the meeting, the PFUJ delegation raised the issue of implementation of Wage Board Award and other problems relating to the day-to-day functioning of the federation.

The president asked Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira to look into the issues raised by the delegation. The PFUJ delegation included Shamsul Islam, Sheharyar Khan, Bilal Thaim, Waqar Satti, Malik Maqbool Illahi, Najmus Saqib and Mushtaq Minhas.

Federal minister for information & broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira, federal minister for labour & manpower Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah, Ms. Fauzia Wahab, Ms. Farahnaz Ispahani, secretary information Mansoor Suhail and Farhatullah Babar, spokesperson to the president, also attended the meeting.
