Obama praises run-off move
WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama expressed his appreciation in a telephone conversation with Hamid Karzai on Wednesday after the Afghan leader agreed to a second round presidential vote. The White House meanwhile said it was “possible” that President Obama would decide whether to send more US troops to Afghanistan before the run-off election on November 7.
Abdullah phones Karzai
KABUL: The main challenger heading into Afghanistan’s presidential run-off, Abdullah Abdullah, said on Wednesday he had telephoned President Hamid Karzai, in their first confirmed contact since the August vote. “Last night I contacted Mr Karzai and I thanked him for his words and for his acceptance of the outcome of the elections,” Abdullah told reporters.
Three militants killed in Bajaur

KHAR: Three militants were killed and as many injured during a search operation in Charmang area while 12 others surrendered to security forces in Mamond Tehsil of Bajaur Agency on Wednesday. Also, three security personnel and two civilians were injured in roadside bomb blasts in Nawagai and Mamond subdivisions. Tribal sources said that three militants were killed and as many injured when they challenged security forces in the valley. Similarly, three soldiers and two civilians sustained injuries when roadside bombs planted by militants went off in Loi Jowar and Mamond Tehsil, respectively. Meanwhile, at least 12 militants laid down arms and surrendered to security forces in Mamond Tehsil.
Dir elders told to evict militants

TIMERGARA: The military on Wednesday warned the elders of Barawal in the Dir Upper district of an operation if they did not evict alleged militants who had taken refuge there. Security forces had launched a military operation, Tor Thandar, in Maidan area of Dir Lower on April 26 this year to drive out the militants. They claimed to have cleared the Maidan area of the militants. The Barawal area of Dir Upper shares border with the Maidan area of Dir Lower and the military authorities believe the militants might have sneaked into Dir Upper area. Barawal is located near the Pak-Afghan border but the presence of militants was never reported from that area.
Bomber who killed top Iran guards was a drug addict
TEHRAN: The suicide bomber who killed top commanders of the elite Revolutionary Guards at the weekend was a drug addict who had been abandoned by his family, Fars news agency reported on Wednesday. The bomber, Abdolvahed Mohammadi Saravani, was addicted to methamphetamine, a central nervous stimulant drug, the report said without quoting a source. His family had abandoned him, making him “good bait for the terrorist group who bribed and hired him,” the report added.
Security Council slams Iran attack
UNITED NATIONS: The UN Security Council on Tuesday condemned a suicide attack in Iran at the weekend and gave a higher toll from the blast of at least 57 dead and 150 wounded. Sunday’s attack had been condemned “in the strongest terms,” said Le Luog Minh, ambassador of council president Vietnam. Members “underlined the need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of this reprehensible act of terrorism to justice and urged all states... to cooperate actively with the Iranian authorities in this regard.”
‘No US military-civilian rift over Afghanistan’
TOKYO: Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Wednesday denied any rift between US military and civilian leaders over Afghanistan. Gates, speaking in Tokyo, said that “these stories may make good reading, but they are not a reflection of reality”. “There have been very close collaborative efforts between our military officers and civilian side of the government” with daily meetings, he said. He said the “rumours” are “just not accurate and do not reflect the close working efforts between our military and civilians”.
IAF to acquire 126 aircraft
NEW DELHI: The Indian Air Force has embarked upon acquiring 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft, apart from upgrading its Sukhois, MiG-29 and Mirage fighter jets, IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal P V Naik said. The IAF is in the process of acquiring 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft, new AEWC Systems from Israel, Aerostat radars, heavy lift transport aircraft, attack helicopters and VVIP transport helicopters.
Top militant killed in held Kashmir
OCCUPIED SRINAGAR: Indian soldiers shot dead three suspected Muslim militants, including a wanted senior commander of Hizbul Mujahedeen Maqsood Bhat, on Wednesday during a clash in mountainous Mahore area, about 180 kilometres south of Srinagar,, the army said.
