Two cops killed in Peshawar ambush

PESHAWAR: A police constable and a Frontier Constabulary soldier were killed when unidentified gunmen attacked a patrolling vehicle of the Nasir Bagh Police Station in Mian Khan Garhi area early on Friday morning. A police party of the Nasir Bagh Police Station was on routine patrol in the area when the gunmen hiding there attacked the vehicle around 4 am on Friday. Frontier Constabulary soldier Mula Jan and police constable Arbab Khan were killed in the attack. The assailants fled the scene.
Impatience growing with Afghan war: Gates
WASHINGTON: Defence Secretary Robert Gates is taking issue with any notion that the war in Afghanistan “is slipping through the administration’s fingers”. Gates acknowledged during a meeting with reporters at the Pentagon that impatience was growing with the war. But, he said, that must be expected, given that the US has had a presence there for eight years. He said he believed “it is important for us to be able to show over the months to come” that Obama’s strategyfor both Afghanistan and Pakistan is succeeding.
US embassy in Kabul fires guards for lewd acts
KABUL: The US embassy in Afghanistan said Friday that it had fired security guards, who were photographed engaging in lewd acts at alcohol-fuelled parties. In a letter this week to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, a group called the Project on Government Oversight said private guards from security firm ArmorGroup North America were staging abusive hazing rituals, jeopardising diplomats’ safety. “Ten guards seen in the offensive photos are leaving the country today; eight were terminated and two resigned,” the embassy said in a statement. “The entire senior management team of ArmorGroup in Kabul is being replaced immediately. The embassy security office continues its interviews of every one of the ArmorGroup guards”.
FC kills five militants in Khyber
PESHAWAR: The paramilitary Frontier Corps killed five suspected militants and arrested 24 in an ongoing operation in the Khyber tribal region, the FC said in a statement here on Friday. The region is home to one of the main routes used to ferry supplies to the NATO and the US forces in neighbouring Afghanistan. Taliban militants frequently attack supply trucks using the Khyber Pass. Authorities claim that scores of militants had been Killed in the latest operation, which began last week in response to a suicide bombing at a border checkpoint that killed 19 policemen.
‘Senate services to attract quality manpower’

ISLAMABAD: Senate Chairman Farooq H Naek hoped that the establishment of Senate of Pakistan Services on the pattern of Federal Public Service would attract talent and quality manpower. “The things in this regard are moving in right direction for bringing the talented bureaucratic cadre in the services of the Senate of Pakistan,” he said while talking to journalists at the Iftar dinner hosted by him for the senior journalists at the Parliament House on Friday. The Iftar dinner was also attended by Deputy Chairman Senate Jan Muhammad Jamali, Syed Nayyar Hussain Bukhari and Wasim Sajjad.
12 killed in rain-related incidents in Mumbai
MUMBAI: Indian police officials said heavy rain late on Thursday triggered a landslide in a densely populated Mumbai slum, killing at least 12 people and injuring 25 others. Police said around 20 tin-roofed shanties were buried under mud and rocks in Sakinaka, a northeast Mumbai suburb after a late night heavy downpour. They said on Friday that policemen, fire fighters and slum dwellers pulled 25 people from the debris, but many others remained trapped under piles of mud and stones.
Pilgrims asked to stick to Makkah, Madina
Islamabad: The government of Saudi Arabia has said that the pilgrims cannot visit cities other than Makkah and Madina while in the Kingdom for Haj or Umra. The Saudi Interior Ministry warned that anyone, who provides transport to any place other than the designated cities, would be fined 100,000 riyals
Indian troops kill six Kashmiris
ISLAMABAD: Indian troops, in their fresh acts of state terrorism, martyred six more innocent Kashmiri youth, five of them at Machil in Kupwara and one at Mahore in Reasi. An Assistant Commandant of Indian Border Security Force committed suicide by shooting himself with his service weapon at Chadwal in Kathua. This brought the number of such deaths among the troops to 148 since January 2007, the KMS reported.

Power supply restored
ISLAMABAD: The problem in the Guddu Thermal Power Station in Kashmor has been fixed and the electricity restored to different areas of Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan.According to a private news channel, the power station had caught fire on Thursday. As a result, the power supply to various areas was suspended. However, fire brigades controlled the flames after an hour’s efforts. The incident resulted in suspension of power supply to Ghotki, Deharki, Mir Pur Mathelo and Jacobabad while power supply suspended in different areas of Sindh like Sibbi and Nasir Abad and some areas of Punjab. The DCO Kashmor said that the power station was saved by immediate fire-control efforts.
Six die of gastro in Kalash

CHITRAL: Six persons, including two women, died on Friday due to the outbreak of gastroenteritis in Birir village here in Kalash Valley. Sources said most of the affected persons belonged to the Kalash community.
