$2.5 billion to rebuild Swat infrastructure
PESHAWAR: NWFP Minister for Environment Wajid Ali Khan on Wednesday said about $2.5 billion would be required for the reconstruction of infrastructure in the militancy plagued Swat Valley. “These are initial estimates. We are preparing a comprehensive report about the damages in Swat,” he said.
Pakistan’s needs increased 10-fold: UN
ISLAMABAD: United Nations Emergency Relief Coordinator John Holmes has said he estimates a 10-fold increase in the ‘needs’ in Pakistan. “The global recession puts pressure on the aid budgets of all donor governments, but of course it puts immeasurably more pressure on crises-stricken people in poor countries,” he said.
Benazir murder probe body to contribute to justice: Munoz
UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations commission looking into the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto will contribute to cause of justice by indicating the facts and circumstances behind the December 2007 tragedy, its Chairman Heraldo Munoz said on Wednesday. “We’ll contribute to justice the Pakistani authorities are seeking by identifying facts and circumstances of the assassination,” he told reporters. Munoz, who is Chile’s UN ambassador, said that the commission’s mandate was agreed between the United Nations and the Government of Pakistan and they would be operating under its limitations.
India to procure $8.5 bn military hardware
NEW DELHI: The Indian government has earmarked $8.5 billion for procurement of military hardware during 2009-10. Defence Minister AK Antony informed Rajya Sabha on Wednesday that modernisation plan in the form of Long Term Integrated Perspective Plan, five-years Services Capital Acquisition Plan and Annual Acquisition Plan are prepared with due consideration to Indiaís security concerns, perspective defence capabilities and equipment profile. India will spend $30 billion during the next five years to procure advanced aircraft, guns, helicopters and naval vessels for its three services.
LI takes control of strategic position

BARA: The volunteers of banned outfit Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) on Wednesday took control of a strategically important position of outlawed organisation Ansarul Islam (AI) in Ghulam Ali area after fierce clashes in Tirah Valley. After occupation of a key position of the AI in Ghulam Ali area by the LI, the whole Kamarkhel area came under their control. The LI volunteers also set on fire the houses of AI supporters, including Lachi Gul, Jan Muhammad, Zabit Khan and Mian Khan.
British troops facing shortage of helicopters
ISLAMABAD: A British minister has admitted for the first time that British troops fighting in Afghanistan do not have enough helicopters. Lord Malloch-Brown, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office minister responsible for Afghanistan, admitted that there was a shortage after public criticism from leading figures in the Army, the Times Online reported. Senior military figures and MPs have accused the government of failing British troops on the front line. Last week General Sir Richard Dannatt, the head of the Army, claimed that government ministers were failing to supply enough men and equipment for the conflict.

BRUSSELS: Nato Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer was recovering well in a Brussels hospital Wednesday, a day after he was taken ill and operated on for a blood clot in his heart, his spokesman said.
Three hurt in Quetta blast
QUETTA: Three people were wounded when a homemade explosive device ripped in a shop in Liaquat Bazaar, the City Police said on Wednesday. The blast took place inside a busy “Chaat Shop”, a police official said adding that initial investigation suggested that it was a homemade explosive device. The blast wounded three people, including the owner of the shop. They were rushed to the hospital where their condition was stated to be out of danger. The City police have started investigating the incident.
