Pak-France working group on nuclear cooperation to be formed
By our correspondent
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Thursday urged the need for chalking out a roadmap for pragmatic cooperation in the field of civil nuclear energy with France.
The call came during meetings of Admiral Edouard Guillaud, Adviser to President Sarkozy of France, with President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.
In his meeting with President Zardari, Admiral Edouard Guillaud discussed matters relating to Pak-France cooperation in different areas, the Friends of Pakistan initiative, the rehabilitation of Internally Displaced Persons and the drive against militants.
Admiral Guillaud’s visit to Pakistan is part of efforts aimed at further boosting the Pak-French relations in the wake of Zardari-Sarkozy meetings in May last, spokesperson to President and former senator Farhatullah Babar said.
He said during President Zardari’s recent visit to France, it was decided to enhance and explore new areas of cooperation in the fields of energy, including civilian nuclear power plants for peaceful purposes, trade, civil aviation and defence.
During Zardari’s visit to France, it was also agreed to work out a framework for cooperation agreement within the next three months to comprehensively cover cooperative relationship between the two countries, the spokesperson said.
The ambassador of France and other senior officials, Defence Minister Ch Ahmad Mukhtar and Interior Minister Rehman Malik attended the meeting besides senior officials. Admiral Edouard Guillaud also called on Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and discussed matters of mutual interest.
The PM proposed that the governments of Pakistan and France should chalk out a roadmap for pragmatic cooperation in the field of civil nuclear energy. He said a working group could be established to develop an agreed way forward on nuclear cooperation.
While highlighting the Army operation against the militants in Malakand Division and Fata, the prime minister urged countries like France to extend their full support to Pakistan by providing military equipment and assistance to deal with the anti-terrorist action effectively.
The prime minister stated that Pakistan was keenly looking forward to the visit of President Sarkozy and signing of two frameworks on defence, security and counter terrorism and in economic and energy fields.
Admiral Guillaud assured the prime minister that France would provide military equipment including Tiger Helicopters to Pakistan. He hoped that both sides would also make headway on trade, economic and civil nuclear energy cooperation during the visit of French secretary of state for foreign trades to Pakistan on July 20, 2009.
Online adds: Admiral Guillaud and his delegation also met the Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, who raised the issue of drone attacks in Pakistan with him as well as with General Stanley McChrystal, Commander International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan, who called on the COAS separately.
