Taliban attack on Malakand University kills five

Thursday, March 19, 2009

By Muhammad Jalil

CHAKDARA: Four cops and a Malakand University security guard were killed and three others were injured in a gunfight with militants on the premises of the campus on Tuesday night. The Taliban later arrested 14 militants involved in the incident in a search operation.

Sources said about 40 armed men in the guise of Taliban arrived at the university’s main entrance and opened fire on the guard, Khaliqdad, for offering resistance. The guard sustained serious bullet injuries.

After receiving information, a police party of Ouch Police Station, headed by ASI Azizullah, rushed to the site but the militants fired a rocket at the police van, killing three cops on the spot. The dead cops were identified as ASI Azizullah Khan, Head Constable Inayatullah and Constable Adam Khan.

The police van driver Muhammad Nazeer, Constable Rehmatullah and three other university security guards were also wounded in the attack. The injured were rushed to hospital where the driver and guard Khaliqdad succumbed to their injuries.

Meanwhile, the militants escaped in two university’s Hiace vans, leaving behind their own vehicles and some arms.

Taking a serious notice of the incident, Malakand Commissioner Syed Muhammad Javed rushed to the university and held a meeting with the university Vice-Chancellor Dr Muhammad Rasool Khan and local elders about the incident.

Sources said soon after the incident, the Swat-based Taliban launched a search operation in Shamozai area and arrested 14 militants, besides seizing both the vans of the university from their possession. Later, talking to local reporters, the commissioner said the arrested 14 persons were not Taliban but members of a criminal gang and would be tried in the Shariah Court.

The members of the Adenzai Qaumi Jirga also held a meeting with the university administration and extended its cooperation for the security of students and staff of the university. The accused were produced before the Qazi court of Muhammad Rasool Shah in Barikot, where the proceedings were held behind closed door. The local journalists were allowed to witness the proceedings.
