13 foreigners among 24 militants slain
By our correspondent
KHAR: Nine people, including the acting head of the Mamond Qaumi Lashkar, were killed and four others injured in a suicide attack on a mosque in Mamond Tehsil of the troubled Bajaur Agency on Thursday.
Sources said that a suicide bomber blew himself up when the tribesmen were offering the Maghrib prayers at a mosque in Badan village. Mamond Lashkar head Malik Rehmatullah and eight others were killed and four other worshippers injured in the explosion.
Muhammad Kareem, Muhammad, Gul Muhammad, Noor Muhammad, Mira Jan, Syed Azeem, Zakirullah and Musafar were also among the dead. The injured included Fazal Nabi, Shakirullah, Islam Din and Ghulam Mehmood.
The wounded persons were immediately shifted to the Agency Headquarters Hospital, Khar.Sources said Malik Rehmatullah had been receiving threats after he formed a Lashkar and launched an operation against the militants, destroying their several hideouts.
It may be mentioned here that the militants had also killed Mamond Lashkar chief Malik Fazal Mabood and two tribesmen during an operation carried out by the tribal Lashkar against the suspected militants.
Meanwhile, the security forces claimed to have killed 24 militants, including 13 foreigners and a local commander, in different areas of Mamond and Nawagai Tehsils of the restive Bajaur Agency.
Advancing towards Nawagai, at least 24 militants, including 13 foreigners, mostly Uzbeks and a local commander, were killed in exchange of fire with the security forces in Dabarai, Saparai, Gatki, Bagori, Chinar, Charmang, Damadola and Zorbandar areas of Mamond and Nawagai Tehsils, said a press release issued by the Frontier Corps (FC) Headquarters.
Sources said that after taking control of the strategic Loisam town, one of the strongholds of the militants in the violence-hit agency, the security forces were now advancing towards the Nawagai subdivision. On the other hand, seven more Afghan refugees were arrested in the crackdown launched by the political administration in various parts of the Khar subdivision, the headquarters of violence-hit Bajaur Agency.
APP adds from Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani have strongly condemned the suicide attack in Badan area of Tehsil Mamond. In their separate messages, they expressed their deep grief and sorrow over the loss of precious human lives in the cowardly act of terrorism.
