 Lawyers observe countrywide Black Day

ISLAMABAD: The lawyer community observed November 3 as Black Day to condemn the imposition of emergency by former president Pervez Musharraf on this day a year ago. Four main provincial bar associations arranged protest rallies and staged sit-ins, where speakers highlighted the objectives of the movement waged by lawyers.

In Islamabad and Rawalpindi, the lawyers boycotted the Supreme Court, Islamabad High Court, Lahore High Court Rawalpindi Bench and the subordinate courts to welcome deposed chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry at the Rawalpindi Bar Council.

The protesting lawyers staged a sit-in in front of the Parliament House late on Monday night. Earlier on way, different lawyers’ bar associations, traders and political workers had established camps to welcome the rally participants and had erected large banners condemning the act of former president Pervez Musharraf besides slogans in favour of the independence of judiciary.

Among others, the rally was addressed by Ali Ahmed Kurd, newly-elected President of the SCBA, his predecessor Aitzaz Ahsan and deposed chief justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry. Our correspondent from Lahore adds: The Lahore Bar Association (PBA) staged a sit-in at the PMG Chowk and the Lahore High Court Bar Association outside the Governor’s House.

Earlier, both the bar associations held general house meetings when speakers condemned the unconstitutional acts of November 3. The lawyers also criticised the PPP-led government for not undoing acts of a ‘dictator’.

Activists of the Jamaat-e-Islami, Tehrik-e-Insaf, Insaaf Students Federation, Jamiat Talaba Islam, Jamiat Ulema Islam, Tehrik-e-Khaksaar, Pakhtoon Khawa Milli Awami Party, Students Action Committee, Shabab-e-Milli, Muslim Students Federation and the citizens of Pakistan joined lawyers at the GPO Chowk and later marched towards the Governor’s House.

Peshawar: Lawyers of the Peshawar High Court Bar Association (PHCBA), members of the NWFP Bar Council and Peshawar District Bar Association took out a protest rally from the Peshawar High Court and staged a sit-in in front of the PHC.

The lawyers’ associations in Mardan, Nowshera, Swabi, Abbottabad, Haripur, Malakand, DI Khan and Charsadda also boycotted court proceedings and staged sit-ins on roads in front of the districts courts.

Quetta: Lawyers in Balochistan boycotted proceedings of the High Court and all subordinate courts and observed the day as Black Day. Balochistan Bar Association (BBA) gave the boycott call of all courts and observing the day as Black Day in the light of the decision of the National Coordination Council and the Supreme Court Bar Association.

Murree: The lawyers of Murree observed a complete strike and boycotted court proceedings to express solidarity with the deposed judges. A big rally, participated by the workers of the PML-N, JI, TI and UC Nazims, was taken out in the city.

Faisalabad: The lawyers of the District Bar Association and political activists observed Black Day and took out a protest rally. The Faisalabad Union of Journalists (FUJ) also staged a protest in front of the press club. Its office-bearers chanted slogans in favour of the independent judiciary and deposed chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

Multan: Lawyers of Multan staged a sit-in at the Katchery Chowk after taking out a rally to observe Black Day. Political parties, including PML-N, Jamaat-e-Islami, Muttahida Shehri Mahaz, Mazda Truck Union and the MSF, joined the lawyers’ rally from district bar hall to Katchery Chowk and also attended the sit-in protest to express solidarity with them.

Sialkot: The lawyers, PML-N, civil society organisations and traders observed Black Day and staged peaceful rallies in Sialkot, Daska, Sambrial and Pasrur.

Larkana: Activists of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Sindh National Front and Khaksar Tehrik also observed protest demonstrations and sit-in to mark the lawyers Black Day.

Hyderabad: Lawyers of Hyderabad under the aegis of Sindh High Court Bar Association, District Bar Association and Lawyers Movement Action Committee observed tBlack Day. The lawyers boycotted court proceedings and staged sit-in at Fatima Jinnah road opposite civil court building. Jamaat-e-Islami, Sindh Taraqi Pasand Party, Awami Tehrik and Tehrik-e-Insaf also joined the sit-in.
