| 60 militants killed in Swat operation |

MINGORA: The security forces on Friday killed 60 militants and wounded scores of others during intense bombardment of the remote Jaro Banda area, 10 kilometres from the insurgents’ headquarters, Peuchar.
According to the Swat Media Centre (SMC), the security forces blitzed the mountainous area twice, inflicting heavy losses on the militants. The area was first bombed in the morning and then a deadly attack was carried out in the evening. The SMC said that training camps and hideouts of militants in Jaro Banda were targeted during the attacks, which resulted in the killing of 60 militants besides causing injuries to scores of others.
Taliban sources said the jets had fired missiles, which were making 15-foot deep craters in the ground. Other sources said the jets had dropped more than 20 bombs. They said that 10 houses were destroyed in the attack. However, casualties didn’t take place as the houses were empty.
Meanwhile, the militants attacked a convoy of the security forces with a remote-controlled bomb near the Hazara bridge, wounding two soldiers. The forces after the blast launched a search operation in the area and arrested 60 suspected militants.
Continuing with their destruction of schools, the militants blew up the Government Girls’ Middle School, Qambar, and destroyed the entire school building. The blast was so powerful that it rocked the whole area. They also blew up a bridge in Asharay area, cutting off the area with the rest of the valley.
Meanwhile, the death toll in the Mingora suicide attack rose to five as additional station house officer, Said Afzal, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Peshawar. Two children, Kifayat and Uzma, were injured in Hazara area of the Kabal Tehsil, when a mortar shell fell on their house. They were shifted to the Saidu Sharif Hospital.
In another incident in Galoch, Bilal sustained injuries when shots fired by the security forces hit him. Curfew was relaxed from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm in Khwazakhela after five days. The security forces were engaged in the area against the militants for the past five days, killing scores of militants. The authorities on Friday restored power to the valley after repairing the blown-up grid station in Mingora.
