| Tribesmen threaten to scrap deal if US strikes continue |

PESHAWAR: Ahmadzai Wazir tribesmen of South Waziristan Agency (SWA) on Thursday warned of scrapping the peace accord with the government if aerial strikes by the US forces continued.
After a meeting with NWFP Governor Owais Ahmed Ghani at the Governor House, a member of 48-member representative Jirga of the Ahmadzai Wazir tribesmen, said, “We told the governor that the Ahmadzai Wazirs could start fighting against the security forces if they did not stop the US from sending its unmanned aerial vehicles and firing Hellfire missiles on innocent tribesmen in the SWA.”
He said the governor, while urging them to help the government in maintaining peace in the tribal region, promised to convey the grievances of the Ahmadzai Wazir tribesmen to senior military officials and the government functionaries in Islamabad.
Earlier, talking to the Jirga members, Governor Owais Ahmed Ghani lauded the efforts by Ahmadzai Wazir tribe in maintaining peace in its area in the SWA and expressed the confidence that the local peace committee would continue to work with the same sprit and enthusiasm to keep the area peaceful, thus, paving the way for execution of development projects.
Additional Chief Secretary Fata Habibullah Khan, Secretary to Governor Arbab Muhammad Arif and South Waziristan Agency political agent were also present on this occasion. The Jirga members condemned the recent attack by Nato forces on Angoor Adda, demanding protection to the tribesmen from such cowardly attacks.
The governor assured the Jirga that as per the government’s clear and candid strategy, every inch of its soil would be protected from foreign aggression and cross-border attacks. He also announced grant of compensation for the heirs of innocent victims of the Angoor Addah attack. The governor said maintenance of peace was not solely responsibility of the government rather the local people and tribes should also have to play their role in this regard.
Peace in Wazir area of the SWA, the governor said, was appreciative, where the peace committee succeeded in purging the area of unwanted elements. He said since February the area had been peaceful, and the development work had gained momentum.
Talking about development requirements of the area, inhabited by Ahmadzai Wazir tribe, the governor particularly mentioned education as “top priority”, saying that a cadet college will be established in the SWA for which the site would be selected in consultation with the elders.
He also promised the Jirga to improve facilities in the education and health sectors besides giving due consideration to provision of 132 kv grid station in the area. He also promised the Jirga to give due consideration to its other demands.
