| Rehman Malik says 30-day judges deadline has not yet begun |

ISLAMABAD: Rehman Malik, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Interior, on Friday created confusion on the issue of the judges' restoration, claiming that the 30-day countdown will start the day the cabinet takes the oath.
Denying that he is the Presidency's choice as adviser, he said: "I am a PPP man and not the Presidency's representative." A leading lawyer on Friday apprehended that Malik's appointment, as Interior Ministry's boss, is to create hurdles in the smooth restoration of the deposed judges.
Though Malik said he is committed to the Murree Declaration that promises that the deposed judges would be restored within 30 days of the government's formation, he insisted that the countdown would start when the cabinet would take oath.
For most the countdown has already started with the taking of oath by Prime Minister Makhdoom Yousuf Raza Gilani, Malik says in his view the government would be formed with the induction of the cabinet.
"I may be wrong," he, however, admitted and clarified that the PPP might have a different viewpoint. Malik said he has friendship with Tariq Aziz, the close confidant of President Musharraf, when he was assistant director and Aziz was assistant commissioner Income Tax. Malik said he is in favour of the restoration of the judges and would not get involved in any such thing as apprehended by some.
Malik said that he wanted to go back to London to take over his business but he has been given this responsibility. He expressed his resolve that he needs a few weeksí time to show his mettle.
The Pakistan People's Party has signed the Murree Accord, still some elements are still found persuading some leading lawyers to a "Minus-One" formula that exclude the deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry from the list of deposed judges to be restored.
The party though rejected these reports, no less than Justice (retd) Tariq Mehmud confirmed to The News that he was approached by a top legal aide and a sitting Senator of the PPP. On the contrary Nawaz Sharif-led PML-N is not ready to compromise on the issue and is determined to get the judges restored as soon as possible. Nawaz Sharif has started the countdown when the National Assembly took oath on 17th March.
