ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Friday gave President General Pervez Musharraf until December 1 to hang up his uniform and take a new oath of presidential office as a civilian.
In written ruling a day after dismissing the final challenges against his re-election, the SC also urged him to lift the state of emergency “at the earliest.” The rulings give a clear timetable for Musharraf to fulfil his commitment to step down as head of the military, a move that may go some way to placating an international community outraged by his emergency rule.
The notice issued by the Supreme Court ordered the Election Commission and government “to take all necessary steps by December 1” to announce the formal result. “Within a week, he is going to take oath as a civilian president,” Attorney General Malik Mohammad Qayyum told AFP afterwards.
The court orders that he should revoke emergency at the earliest. It will have some effect,” he said, although it was unlikely to be lifted as early as next week. AFP APP adds: Attorney General Malik Qayyum said that President General Pervez Musharraf was likely to take oath of office on Wednesday.
Talking to PTV and a private channel separately, he said Chief Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar would administer the oath and before that General Musharraf would relinquish the post of army chief.
The apex court Friday validated his election and vacated a stay order of October 5 by which the Election Commission had been restrained from issuing official notification of the election result.
Malik Qayyum also said emergency was also likely to be lifted before general elections scheduled for January 8, but a decision in this regard would be taken by the president himself. He said the president had volunteered to doff his uniform as there was no compulsion to do so, adding that deposed judges had created confusion regarding the uniform.
