| Hosiery exporters losing orders |

| LAHORE: Hosiery, an export oriented industry has become unable to meet commitments to foreign buyers and further orders are not being confirmed from importers on the plea that power and gas crisis will not let the exporters fulfil their commitments. In a statement issued here on Tuesday Vice Chairman Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers Association Syed Hassan Masood Zaidi stated that knitted garments were at number one in export items of Pakistan that earned about US $ 2 billion last year. But, he lamented that the knitwear industry had been crippled by power shut down and gas supply cut-off. The factories have been forced to close their production resulting into unemployment of the huge workforce, he added. He stressed that supply of gas be restored immediately to export oriented units so that our image in the international market is saved from total damage. He referred to recent reports published in the press that export target could not be achieved this year. He was of the view that when earning hands of economy are being tightened, how we can achieve the export target. He highlighted that knitwear industry is at the top in export earning for Pakistan in spite of all the unfavourable conditions prevailing in the country. If we are given free hand, it is only the export oriented industry which can earn foreign exchange for country’s import needs, he added.
