Bail denied to ‘husband’ of Meera’s mother

THE Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed bail petition of one Rana Akram who claimed to be the husband of Shafqat Zohra Bokhari, the mother of film actress Meera.

Petitioner Rana Akram, who is serving a jail term, through his counsel, stated that his ‘wife’ Zohra implicated him in a fake case that he misappropriated her Rs 10.2 million which she had given him to make arrangements for her settlement in the UK. The petitioner submitted a copy of Nikah Nama (marriage certificate) with his reported wedding with Zohra and rejected Zohraís claim that she paid him the money through a bank draft.

The court observed that the petitioner could not be released on bail at this stage when the trial had just begun.

Petition for action against lawyers: Barrister Iqbal Jafree on Thursday filed an amended petition in the Lahore High Court to complement his earlier petition seeking declaring all politicians and bureaucrats beneficiaries of NRO disqualified for holding public offices. In the amended petition, Iqbal Jafree also included a category of lawyers who were exploiting people along with politicians and bureaucrats.The petitioner has included names of certain lawyers in the petition and stated that the lawyers also joined exploiters club as they had been continuously subjecting people to torture and humiliation. He cited examples of three recent incidents in which a group of lawyers tortured media men and a citizen, Nasim Rajput. In another incident, lawyer Nawaz Cheema hurled accusations at a LHC judge, the petitioner said.

report of lawyers’ torture oF journalists: RegistrarLahore High Court on Thursday directed the District & Sessions Judge Lahore to submit a report after holding an inquiry into the incident of lawyers’ torture on two media personnel on the other day.

The registrar issued these directions following a meeting with victims Muhammad Ashfaq, reporter and Irfan Arshad, cameraman, of a private TV channel who were tortured by a group of lawyers in sessions court. The Sessions Judge has issued notices to the office-bearer of Lahore Bar Association and media personnel for December 2. Meanwhile, Barrister Javed Iqbal Jaffery also filed an application in LHC, seeking strict action against those lawyers who tortured journalists.
