Only 30 per cent of sugar goes to domestic consumers in Pindi

Only 30 per cent of sugar quota allocated for the residents of Rawalpindi is sold to consumers at the controlled price, while the remaining is sold for commercial purposes.

Out of 5,700 bags of 50-kilogram sugar, 1,710 are distributed among 537 shopkeepers. Shopkeepers sell this sugar to consumers at the controlled rate of Rs40 per kilogram. On the other hand, as many as 3,390 bags are sold to owners of sweet shops and bakeries.

Deputy District Officer Revenue (DDOR) Muhammad Arif Raheem told ‘The News’ that the Punjab government is providing 5,700 50-kilogram bags of sugar to Rawalpindi from which 30 per cent bags are sold to domestic consumers at the controlled rate.

The local administration had issued ration cards to only 537 shopkeepers for selling sugar at Rs40 per kilogram, he added. Shopkeepers who get sugar at the commercial rate sell it on their own rates, he added. He said that those shopkeepers who have been issued ration cards are bound to sell sugar for Rs40 per kilogram.

The local administration had got registered dozens of FIRs against hoarders and profiteers, he said adding that people should lodge complaints against those shopkeepers who have not displayed banners of sale of sugar for Rs40 per kilogram.

The price of a 50-kilogram bag of sugar for domestic consumers is Rs1,963 and Rs2,600-2,700 for commercial purposes. The rate of commercial sugar fluctuates daily in the open market.
