PPP leader Naheed Khan has urged federal ministers who had benefited from the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) to step down in the larger interest of the party.

Talking to reporters at the residence of PPP Lahore leader Chaudhry Aslam Gill on Thursday, Naheed said NRO beneficiaries holding ministerial offices should resign and MNAs should present themselves for accountability. The couple visited Aslam Gill to express condolence over his mother’s death.

To a question, Naheed said the vacuum created after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto would take centuries to fill. She said the incumbent government should play its role in addressing people’s grievances. Good governance was need of the hour, she said. She said the present government reinstated most of the employees who were employed during the second tenure of Benazir Bhutto as prime minister. She said the government should ensure reinstatement of these employees and any bureaucrat putting hurdles in this way must be dismissed.

Dr Safdar Abbasi said the decision of government to table the NRO in parliament and then backtracking over this issue was a setback for the party. He said the controversial amendments including 17th and 58-2b need to be repealed as it was the desire of Benazir who signed the Charter of Democracy (CoD).

To a query about in-house change in parliament, he said this perception wasn’t right as the PM was elected unanimously.

To a question about the probe in Benazir Bhutto’s killing, he said the delay in investigation of the incident could lead to severe desperation among party workers. He said despite passage of two years, the investigation had not been completed and it was a matter of concern.
