| FC Sepoy promoted for averting catastrophe PESHAWAR: Sepoy Umer Rehman of the Frontier Constabulary (FC) was promoted as Havaldar on Monday in recognition of his bravery, mental alertness and ability of taking quick decision in difficult times that saved the people and the Badaber police station from a major catastrophe in a suicide blast. The devastation in terms of life and property would have been much higher had he not stopped the suicide bomber from coming close to the police station building from his post atop the building, said NWFP Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain, while talking to newsmen at the site of the blast. On the recommendations of the NWFP government, FC Commandant Zafarullah Khan promoted Sepoy Umer Rehman as Havaldar due to his bravery and devotion to duty, the minister added. Railways to run four trains on Eid ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Railways will ply four special trains to cater to the expected rush of passengers on different routes in the days before Eid-ul-Azha. One train will be run on November 25 and the remaining three on November 26, sources said. “A comprehensive strategy has been chalked out to cope with the Eid rush,” the sources said. Five die in road accident near Badin BADIN: Five people were killed and 26 others sustained injuries when a passenger van overturned on the Matli-Digri Road near here on Monday.Sources said the tie-rod of the van, which was coming from Hyderabad, broke down 70 kilometres away from here. As a result, the van overturned. Five people, including two children, died on the spot and 26 others sustained injuries. Eighteen injured were shifted to the Government Hospital, Digri, for treatment, while eight critically injured were rushed to the Civil Hospital, Mirpurkhas.The identity of the victims is yet to be ascertained.The van driver fled the scene. Police have registered a case and started investigation. Sharif brothers due in Quetta on 18th QUETTA: Pakistan Muslim League-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif and Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif will visit the provincial capital of Balochistan on November 18. PML-N Balochistan chapter leader Sardar Yaqub Nasir told the media that during the visit Mian Nawaz Sharif would meet local politicians, particularly nationalist leaders. Nationalist leaders Mehmood Khan Achakzai, Brahamdagh Bugti and Akhtar Mengal are out of the country while Mir Hasil Bazenjo and Nawab Khair Bakhsh Marri are in Karachi. However, the PML-N said that Nawaz would meet the sons of Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti. The provincial government has directed the security of the coming PML-N leaders. Rally in Sukkur against ‘media trial’ of Zardari By our correspondent KHAIRPUR: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) took out a rally in Sukkur against the “media trial” of President Asif Ali Zardari. Addressing the rally, Deputy Speaker Sindh Assembly Shahla Raza alleged that “pro-establishment political parties” were once again conspiring against a Sindhi president. She claimed that Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was martyred because he was a Sindhi and the same forces were conspiring against President Asif Ali Zardari. She said that after the martyrdom of Benazir Bhutto, millions of people raised the slogan of ‘Pakistan Na Khapay’ but Asif Ali Zardari made it clear to them that the existence of Pakistan was important, raising the slogan of ‘Pakistan Khapay’. CJ takes notice of Hindu woman’s plight By our correspondent ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Monday directed the office to issue notice to the Rahim Yar Khan DPO to appear before the court on November 23 in a case related to the Hindu community. The CJ took a suo moto notice on a news report, appearing in a section of the press, reflecting therein the problems faced by a married Hindu woman. It was reported that the woman, Pram Sari Mai, wife of Goband Jee, could not get her passport to visit India even after paying a huge amount. The CJ directed the DPO to produce Pram Sari Ma on Novmber 23 along with police record, if any case is registered against her. Mumbai suspects get copies of charges By Khalid Iqbal RAWALPINDI: The anti-Terrorist Court (ATC), Rawalpindi, on Monday issued copies of charges levelled against the accused of THE Mumbai attack. The court would frame charges against them on November 23. The Mumbai suspects had filed an application in the court on the last date, praying for provision of copies of the charges the Special Investigation Cell (SIC) had levelled against them. The Special Investigation Cell (SIC) registered a case against the Mumbai suspects, including Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, Zarar Shah, Abu Alqa, Jamil Ahmed, Hamad Ameen Sadiq, Muhammad Ashfaq, Shahid Jamil Riaz and Javed Iqbal. |
