Steps urged to end Pakhtuns’ woes

PESHAWAR: Pakistan People’s Party-Sherpao (PPP-S) provincial president Sikandar Sherpao has said that Pakhtuns are fighting war of their survival and serious efforts should be made to steer them out of the prevailing turmoil.

He was addressing a conference of intellectuals and analysts representing different shades of thoughts here Saturday. Besides others, Afzal Khamosh, Dr Yousaf, Dr Said Alam Mahsud, Maqsood Bangash, Dr Haider Ali, Faqir Hussain Lala, Eng Zulfiqar Aziz, Meraj Afridi, Asad Afridi, Jamaluddin Khan, Zar Ali Khan, Zahir Shah, Iltaf Bacha, Kifayat Khan, Tahir Khan, Asif Ali Khan and Masood Jabbar also spoke at the gathering.

The participants discussed the current political and security situation.

Sikandar Sherpao said that Pakhtuns were passing through a very critical juncture of their history and concerted efforts should be made for ending their sense of deprivation. He resented that on one hand the blood of Pakhtuns was being shed while on the other they had been dubbed as terrorists. He underscored the need for the restoration of the real identity of Pakhtuns and protecting their interests.

The PPP-S leader also stressed the need for bringing doctors, lawyers, intellectuals, political activists and people belonging to other walks of life on a single platform so as they could be involved in the consultation process on the current issues.

He castigated that certain elements had promised to bring about pleasant changes in the lives of Pakhtuns through the restoration of peace and tranquility but they could not fulfill their commitment. The participants agreed that more meetings would be arranged to prepare a plan for resolving the problems of the Pakhtun nation.
