World number 11 Flavia Pennetta will open the 2009 Fed Cup final against American 20-year-old Alexa Glatch following Friday's draw here. That will be followed by Italian number two Francesca Schiavone against teenager Melanie Oudin, the top seeded American. The pairings will then reverse for Sunday's singles matches and if a decisive fifth rubber is needed Roberta Vinci and Sara Erani will play Liezel Huber and Vania King in the doubles.
Yasir beats Irfan in golf tournament
KARACHI: Yasir Zaidi won the Karachi Cup Golf tournament on sudden death after fine display of skills against Irfan Rasheed here on Friday. After 18 holes the score was levelled, resulting in a second hole of play-off. Total 40 golfers took part in the event which was started in April, but due to Chief of Naval Staff Golf Championship & Governor's Cup Golf Tournament the dates of the finals were moved forward.
Renault decision 'before end of 2009', says chief
FLINS, France: Renault company chief Carlos Ghosn said on Thursday a final decision on the future of their Formula One team would be taken "before the end of the year".According to reports Renault are considering following in the wake of Toyota and pulling out of the sport. Ghosn did not deny that would be the case, saying: "We don't want to disrupt the team by making statements, but I can guarantee that before the end of the year we will announce our intentions regarding the participation of Renault in Formula One."
Rossi already planning for 2010
VALENCIA, Spain: Valentino Rossi, with a ninth world title safely wrapped-up, is already planning for the 2010 campaign and hopes to put down an early marker in Sunday's season-ending Valencia Grand Prix. Rossi made sure of the 2009 championship by finishing third in the rain-hit Malaysian Grand Prix two weeks ago, and will start testing his new Yamaha bike on Monday. Rossi hasn't won here for five years - a poor record he is keen to put right on Sunday.Australia's Casey Stoner, who has won the last two races on his Ducati following a three-event absence due to fatigue, dominated the race weekend here in 2008.
All-Egyptian final at World Open
KARACHI: Defending champion Ramy Ashour and former champion Amr Shabana will meet in the second successive all-Egyptian world final after successes in the semifinals of the Kuwait Men's World Open 2009 on the all-glass court here at Green Island Resort. Third seed Ashour upset France's world number one Gregory Gaultier in the second semifinal of the premier event on the Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Tour. Earlier Amr Shabana celebrated his fourth appearance in a World Open final after beating Englishman James Willstrop in four games.
Inter-school tennis from November 17
KARACHI: Sindh Tennis Association (STA) is organising 4th STA Inter-School Tennis Championship from 17th November at the hard Courts of City Sports Complex. Schools are advised to send their entries to secretary STA Khalid Rehmani or to Mohammad Saeed at City Sports Complex latest by 15th November. Daily allowance of Rs200 will be given to all out station players.
