| Karachi Lawyers have demanded a public trial of former president, Gen. (retd) Pervez Musharraf, for taking unlawful action on November 3, 2007; similar trials have been demanded for all those who aided and abated him in subverting the Constitution. The lawyers observed November 3 as a “black day” to denounce Gen. (retd) Pervez Musharraf’s act of imposing emergency in the country by suspending the Constitution and sacking 60 superior court judges, including Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry. Addressing a general body meeting of Sindh High Court Bar Association (SHCBA), Bar President Rasheed A. Razvi said that lawyers had always fought for the rule of law and independence of the judiciary. He added that it was the joint struggle of the lawyers, civil society, media and political activists which resulted in the restoration of judges and civilian rule in Pakistan. It was due to the efforts of the Bar that all unconstitutional acts of November 3, 2007, were reversed, and the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court through its decision of July 31, 2009, he said. The SHCBA general body also adopted a resolution, denouncing all those who initiated, collaborated with and colluded in the attempt to subjugate and muzzle the judiciary. They called for a public trial of General (retd) Pervez Musharraf and all those who aided and abated him in subverting the Constitution. The Bar also reiterated its vow to maintain its independence and continue the struggle for the independence of the judiciary, strengthening constitutionalism and the rule of the law in the country. |
