Footballers die in road accident

KARACHI: Six footballers and two officials of the Kalat’s Babu Nauroz Football Club were killed in a road accident on late on Sunday night.

The tragic accident took place some 200km south of Quetta when the Kalat-bound bus, carrying Nauroz Football Club squad, rammed into a stationary truck. As a result, the bus was completely damaged, leaving eight people dead including six footballers and two officials of the said club.

The players, who lost their lives, include Ali Ahmed, Salman, Mohiuddin, Sajid Hussain, Attaullah and Muhammad Anwar while the officials include Muhammad Karim, the club secretary, and Safiullah Tabani.

Sources said that the condition of two footballers including Saddam Hussain and Manzoor Ahmed is critical. Others who sustained injuries are Nabi Bakhsh, Jamil Ahmed, Abdul Salam, Ali Akbar, Ghulam Sarwar, Allah Bakhsh, Muhammad Alam and Khalil Ahmed.

The team was leaving for Kalat from Khuzdar after suffering 0-2 defeat at the hands of the hosts District Football Association (DFA) Khuzdar during All Sindh-Balochistan Football tournament.

The officials of the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) including its president Makhdoom Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat, secretary Col Ahmad Yar Lodhi and the coach of WAPDA football team Khalid Butt have expressed grief and sorrow over the sad demise of the players and officials.
