Brilliant Irfan guides KRL to crushing win

KARACHI: Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) thrashed Karachi Whites by an innings and 107 runs while Rawalpindi outclassed Quetta by an innings and 192 runs on Saturday in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy being held in different cities of the country.

Here at the National Stadium, Karachi Whites, after conceding 421 runs first innings to KRL, failed to fight back and perished on 314 in their second innings. Akbar-ur-Rehman (75), Afsar Nawaz (64) and Shadab Kabir (53) were the top scorers. Towering left-arm paceman Muhammad Irfan took six for 96, finishing with 11 wickets in the match while Tariq Mehmood claimed three for 45.

Karachi Whites had scored 87 in their first innings while KRL, in reply, had posted 508 for eight declared.

Meanwhile, at the National Ground in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, after taking 381 runs first innings lead, were able to dismiss Quetta for 189 in their second innings to lift the show by an innings and 192 runs. Rahid Latif clinched six for 50, finishing with 11 wickets in the match while Muhammad Ramiz claimed three for 61, ending with eight wickets in the show.

Opener Shoaib Khan (49), Nasim Khan (31) and Faisal Irfan (30 not out) were the main contributors for Quetta.

Earlier, Quetta, while replying to Rawalpindi’s first innings total of 529, resumed their first innings from an overnight scorer of 116 for five and were bundled out for 148. Jalat Khan top-scored 36. Muhammad Ramiz and Rashid Latif captured five wickets each.

At the LCCA Ground in Lahore, Lahore Shalimar were facing an innings defeat against Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) as after being forced to follow, they were 134 for four in their second innings till close of the third day. They still need 179 runs to avoid an innings defeat with six wickets in hand. Ali Reza was at the crease on 38 while Abid Ali (34) and Sohail Idrees (33) were the other main contributors for Lahore Shalimar. Asad Ali picked up two wickets for SNGPL. Earlier, while replying to SNGPL first innings total of 609 for six declared, Lahore Shalimar resumed their first innings on 158 for five and perished on 296. Ali Reza, who was not out when the bails were drawn on Friday batted well and remained not out on 69 with ten fours. The other major 44 runs came in the form of extras. Asad Ali and Rizwan Akbar shared three wickets each while Saad Altaf claimed two.

WAPDA took 57 runs first innings lead when they dismissed Habib Bank Limited (HBL) for 354 at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. HBL resumed their overnight score of 64 for three and were bowled out for 354. Salim Elahi, who was playing on 15 at close of the second day’s play, slammed fantastic unbeaten 178. He hit 24 boundaries in his excellent knock.

Abdur Rehman (45) and Danish Kaneria (36) were the other main contributors. Fast bowler Shabbir Ahmad claimed three while Umaid Asif and Ali Azmat took two wickets each.

At stumps, WAPDA had lost one wicket for seven in their second innings.

Karachi Blues were right in control against Islamabad at the Diamond Cricket Club Ground in the federal capital as they had taken Islamabad’s eight wickets for 295 in their second innings after claiming 160 runs first innings lead. Umair Khan (53), Zeeshan Mushtaq (45) and Raheel Majeed (44) were the main contributors for Islamabad.

Tanveer Ahmad took four while Fahadullah Khan and Tariq Haroon shared two wickets each for Karachi Blues. At the Sports Stadium, Sargodha, after conceding 84 runs first innings lead, Peshawar bounced back against Faisalabad when they scored 213 for three at stumps yesterday. Opener Fawad Ali cracked 110 with the help of 18 fours and a six. Muhammad Idrees made 41. Earlier, Faisalabad, while chasing Peshawar’s first innings total of 232, resumed the third day’s play with 263 for seven and perished on 316. Ijaz Ahmad scored 87, while Naved Latif posted 51. Abbottabad got 137 runs first innings lead against Hyderabad when they dismissed the visitors for 283. Khalid Usman claimed five wickets for Abbottabad. At stumps, Abbottabad were 248 for six in their second innings. Riaz Kail was at the crease on 65. Lal Kumar clinched four wickets.
