HYDERABAD: The citizens rejoiced the much-awaited first shower of monsoon that ended the hot and humid weather but the power breakdowns created problems for them while more rains had been forecast.

The rainfall, which started late on Friday night, continued with short intervals throughout Saturday. Various localities were submerged with rain water.

Some streets in Latifabad, Qasimabad, Hyderabad city and even Cantonment area remained inundated because there was no lull in the rains, causing difficulties for citizens.

However, the citizens enjoyed the first rainfall of monsoon.

According to the Met department, the city area received 90 millimetres and Latifabad received 111 millimetres of rains.

The citizens complained about power breakdowns since the first drop of rain on Friday night and various areas were not supplied with electricity because of faults in the fragile system of the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (Hesco).

Meanwhile, District Coordination Officer of Hyderabad has said due to monsoon flood/rains and to avoid any mishap, a District Relief Control Room has been established in his camp office with telephone Nos 022-9200115/022-9200116 and Fax No 022-9201316.

Our Thatta correspondent adds: Heavy rains lashed Thatta since Friday evening.

The power supply broke down during the night and played hide and seek on Saturday.

Life was paralysed in Thatta city following the inundation of all roads and streets with sewerage mixed rainwater flowing all over due to the failure of the drainage system.

Rain was also reported from all other parts of the district.

APP adds: A dust storm hit Khairpur, Shikarpur, Lakhi Ghulam Shah, Thull, Kandhkot, Jacobabad, Sukkur, Rohri,Ghotki, Pano Akil, Salehpat, Mirwah, Nara, Kot Diji and their adjoining areas on Friday night.

Growers in Khairpur district who had just started harvesting date fruit feared the dust storm would be followed by rain, which would be harmful for the crops at this stage.
