Maratab, Maaz win gold, Pakistan’s tally hits 59

KARACHI: Pakistan won two gold medals, eight silver and 12 bronze to increase its tally to 59 by the end of the sixth day of South Asian Games in India on Wednesday.

Pakistan remain at the third position, far behind toppers India, who have 194 medals, and second-placed Sri Lanka, who have clinched 133 medals.

Maratab Shah and Maaz Khan won gold medals in wushu men’s category. “By the grace of God I defeated an Indian in the final and bagged a gold medal for my country. Feeling happy,” said Maaz Khan after the event.

In 16 wushu categories, Pakistan stood second with two gold medals, as many silver and four bronze. Mohsin Ali of Pakistan clinched the bronze medal in 110m men’s hurdle event. India’s J Surendhar and K Prem Kumar won gold and silver medals, respectively. 

Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan secured the bronze medal in men’s javelin throw. Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal and Sri Lanka’s RMSJ Ranasinghe the silver.

In men’s pole vault event, Rehan Anjum of Pakistan captured bronze medal. MHI Sandaruwan of Sri Lanka got gold and Sonu Saini of India silver.

In 50m pistol men team shooting competition, Pakistan claimed the silver medal by scoring 1,583. Pakistan squad comprised Kalimullah Khan, Muhammad Akhtar and Kalemullah. India won the gold medal and Bangladesh the bronze medal.

In tennis, Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi lost to Saketh Myneni of India 2-6, 1-6 in the semi-final of men’s singles.

In swimming 4x100 women medley, Bisma Khan, Lianna Catherine Swan, Kiran Khan and Areeba Shaikh stood second with the timing of 04:48.01 and won silver.

In men’s 800m run, Muhammad Ikram of Pakistan secured the silver medal.

Indunil Herath of Sri Lanka won the gold medal. The bronze medal was grabbed by India’s Hemantha Kumara.

Pakistan have so far won seven gold medals, 20 silver and 32 bronze.  India have bagged 117 gold, 61 silver and 16 bronze medals.  Sri Lanka have 24 gold, 46 silver and 63 bronze medals.  Bangladesh have won 51 medals (three gold, 10 silver and 38 bronze). Nepal have clinched 32 medals, one gold, 12 silver and 19 bronze. Afghanistan have grabbed 15 medals, one gold, three silver and 11 bronze.

Bhutan have managed only one silver and four bronze medals.  The Maldives have only two medals, one silver and one bronze.
