Call to accept legal rights of women

The Punjab Commission on Status of Women (PCSW, in collaboration with the Urban Unit, arranged a ‘Stakeholders Consultative Workshop on Gender Management Information System (GMIS) to discuss the upcoming Gender Parity Report on the eve of International Women’s Day this year.

According to a press release issued on Monday, the workshop was attended by the Urban Unit team, PCSW members, Women Development Department Punjab, DCOs and EDOs Health and Education from various districts of Punjab and the representatives of civil society and NGOs. 

Punjab Commission for Status of Women Chairperson Ms. Fouzia Viqar gave an overview of gender equity in Punjab. She also gave a detailed presentation on the role of Commission in highlighting the key policy and legislation issues for women in major districts of Punjab. “This is high time to acknowledge the legal rights of women for this, which will be the first and foremost step towards empowering them. The implementation of empowerment laws from government will ensure their improved status in the society as well as their much needed input in the progress and prosperity of the country,” she said while talking to the media. Director General Punjab judicial Academy Justice (R) Shahid Saeed, DIG Police Lahore Ishaq Jahangir and Secretary Human Rights and Minority Affairs Bushra Aman also spoke. While representatives from Development Alternative Initiative (DAI), Enhanced Democratic Accountability and Civic Engagement (EDACE), Shirkat Gah, Acid Surveyor Foundation, Aurat Foundation and other NGOs were also present during the workshop. The participants stressed the need for mapping out gaps in national and international commitments and to work under one umbrella for a prosperous Punjab and Pakistan. 

The Urban Unit is facilitating the PCSW for preparation of the Gender Parity Report that will be launched by the worthy chief Minister Punjab on 7th March with regard to the International Women’s Day 2016. The Urban Unit is also playing an instrumental role in collection and review of the data from various districts to be incorporated in the upcoming Gender Parity Report. 

The Gender Parity Report is an annual publication that presents the gender parity status between men and women measured across six thematic areas; education, health, violence against women, demographic and governance, legal rights and economic participation and opportunities. The aim to send report is to highlight the progress and concerns of the women of Pakistan as well as to enable the policymakers to identify the areas requiring immediate concern.

campuses’ security: A divisional committee under the chairmanship of member Board of Revenue Jawad Rafiq Malik has been set up by the chief minister to monitor security arrangements of all public and private schools and colleges in Lahore division. 

Jawad Rafiq Monday chaired a meeting accompanied by Lahore Division Commissioner Abdullah Khan Sumbal in the commissioner office. He has said the body from Tuesday (today) will visit educational institutes daily to monitor security arrangements under the instruction of the Home Department. He said the committee would check the external walls, barriers, CCTV cameras, guards and barbed wires etc. 

Abdullah Khan directed all EDO’s and Director Colleges of Lahore division to make regular visit in their capacity to ensure and improve the arrangements strictly in accordance with the issued instructions. He said monitoring committee jointly would pay visits on daily basis.

All EDO’s of Lahore division, Director Colleges, Lahore, division and police officers participated in the meeting.
