ISLAMABAD: In a significant move, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has summoned Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s son-in-law MNA Captain (retd) Muhammad Safdar on June 1 in a case pertaining to allegedly concealing assets owned by his spouse Maryam Nawaz in his nomination papers.

A complaint to this effect was filed a few days back by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Nawabzada Salahuddin, who had contested from the NA-21, Mansehra constituency in the 2013 general election. He alleged that his rival had not mentioned the offshore companies and assets owned by his spouse as reflected in the Panama Leaks.

The complaint has been filed under Section 94 of the Representation of the People’s Act (RoPA), referring to May 11, 2013 general election.Salahuddin charged that his rival, Captain (retd) Safdar, a resident of district Mansehra and House No180-181 H-Block, Model Town, Lahore, had been illegally and unlawfully declared as returned candidate. The ECP found the complaint in order and decided to summon MNA Sadfar on June 1 to listen what he had to say in his defence.
